Background: The Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) are an important cause of fatal and non-fatal disease burden in Brazil. We aim to describe the burden of NTDs in Brazil from 1990 to 2019.
Methods: We separately modeled the burden of 18 NTDs in Brazil. To estimate the fatal burden, we used Vital Registration (adjusting for underreporting and misclassification) as input data, and ran Poisson models, negative binomial models, and Cause of Death Ensemble models. To estimate the non-fatal burden, we used data from Brazilian Ministry of Health databases and scientific literature and ran DisMod-MR2.1 models. Disability Adjusted Life Years (DALYs) were calculated as the sum of Years of Life Lost and Years Lived with Disability.
Results: We estimated 9,000(95%UI: 4,900—13,500) deaths due to NTDs in Brazil in 2019, 70% of which were due to Chagas disease. The age-standardized NTDs death rate in 2019 was 4.0(UI: 2.1—6.0)/100,000, 62% lower than 1990. In terms of DALYs, the age-standardized rate due to NTDs was 233.9 (UI: 160.5—349.4)/100,000 in 2019, 52% lower than in 1990. Chagas disease and Leishmaniasis were the top causes of DALYs in 2019, with age-standardized rates of 72.3 and 35.2/100,000, respectively. Dengue was the only cause for which the age-standardized DALYs rate increased in this period, doubling from 9.4(UI: 5.4—15.0)/100,000 in 1990 to 18.9(UI: 12.3—23.4)/100,000 in 2019.
Conclusion: These findings describe the progress made in the burden of many NTDs in the past years in Brazil. However, NTDs are still an important cause of disease burden.
