37136 - VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN IN BRAZIL: FINDINGS FROM THE BHSU-3

Objectives: Violence against women is a public health problem and a violation of woman's human rights, and, in all its forms, can disturb woman's mental, sexual and reproductive health. Violence against women may occur following an escalation over time, from threats to aggression and lethality. In Brazil, there is a lack of evidence about the characteristics of this escalation, as well as the profile of its victims. We aimed to examine the association of the victim's socioeconomic and demographic characteristics and the escalation of violence against women in Brazil. Methods: We used data from the 3rd Brazilian Household Survey on Substance Use (BHSU-3) - a nationwide, multi-stage, probability sample survey that interviewed 16,273 individuals in 2015. Herein, women aged 18-65 years were included. Five types of violence in the previous 12-months were investigated (from yellowing to fire shooting). Survey-weighted Poisson models were used to deal with data from a complex survey design. Results: Overall, 3.4% reported 1-2 types of violence and 0.3% >2 types. Women aged 18–34, single [1.37 (95% C.I.:1.12;1.67)], black/brown [1.18 (95% C.I.:0.98;1.42)], unemployed or in irregular workday [1.74 (95% C.I.:1.38;2.19)] were at greater risk of being victims of one additional case of violence. Conclusions: These findings emphasized the importance of implementing appropriate fair gender policies and timely intervention to break the escalation of violence against woman in Brazil. This becomes even more necessary if one considers the recent increase in unemployment in Brazil caused by the COVID-19 epidemic and the possible impact on women's health.
