37499 - POSTPARTUM WEIGHT RETENTION AND GESTATIONAL WEIGHT GAIN IN WOMEN WITH GESTATIONAL DIABETES LETÍCIA RIBEIRO PAVÃO DA SILVEIRA - UFRGS, MARIA INÊS SCHMIDT - UFRGS, MICHELE DREHMER - UFRGS
Objective: To describe weight retention at six postpartum months in pregnant women who had Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM). Methodology: The LINDA-Brazil cohort study (Lifestyle Intervention for Diabetes prevention After Pregnancy), recruited pregnant women with GDM from public health system in Porto Alegre, Pelotas and Fortaleza. Socioeconomic, clinical and nutritional data were evaluated in recruitment. Follow-up by telephone was done periodically up to six-months postpartum. Pre-gestational weight was referred to or obtained from the prenatal card. Gestational weight gain (GWG) and pre-gestational BMI were classified according to the Institute of Medicine (2009). Weight retention was the difference between weight six months postpartum and pre-pregnancy weight. Descriptive data were presented in relative and absolute frequencies or averages and standard deviation. Chi-square test assessed associations between weight retention, pre-gestational BMI and GWG. Results: 706 women were evaluated. The average age was 30.8 ± 6.1 years and 58.9% declared white color. Pre-gestational overweight was found in 33.8%, obesity 44.1%, 40.1% had excessive GWG and 51.3% had weight retention. We found 3.8 ± 7 kg of retention in those with excessive GWG, while in those with adequate GWG the mean was 0.96 ± 5.7 kg. Retention ≥ 5kg occurred in 26.9% and was significantly associated with excessive GWG (p <0.001). Conclusion: The average weight retention at six months postpartum was three times higher in those who had an excessive GWG compared to those who were within the recommendations. There is an association between excessive weight gain during pregnancy and weight retention after six months.
